Seeking control over the peaceful realm of Eorzea and its abundant crystal resources, the more advanced civilization of the Garlean Empire invades the realm from the north. In retaliation, despite their differences and anatgonisms, the city-states of Eorzea reinstate the Grand Companies—comprehensive centers of command which combine the cities' military and economic assets. The player joins one of these states to aid in the war effort. Though Garlean imperials like Gaius van Bealsar intend to conquer, the invasion force's commander, 8th Imperial Legion Legatus Nael van Darnus, has his own agenda.......

Story

The Hyur are a race not originally from Eorzea in Final Fantasy XIV, having migrated there and brought their technology with them. They are very similar to the humes of Final Fantasy XI.

A Hyur midlander is the representative of the player point of view in the intro of the game as well as the image of the Final Fantasy XIV cover and advertisement, on later information regarding the game, now the Hyur takes the role of a warrior in trailers related to the Realm Reborn re-release of the game, also in the promotional illustration of Yoshitaka Amano for the 25th Anniversary of the Final Fantasy series the same hyur in warrior garments appears with other Final Fantasy heroes drawn with Amano's particular style.

The Elezen are a race from Eorzea in Final Fantasy XIV. They are the race that has lived in Eorzea the longest and co-exist peacefully with the other races. They are similar to the Elvaan of Final Fantasy XI. Among the Elezen, the Forester tribe live in the forest but also adapt to urban life, and are excellent archers due to their keen eyesight. The Shader Elezen, also known as the Duskwights, live in caves and see the Foresters as traitors. Shaders have excellent hearing and are skilled in hand-to-hand combat, and many act as thieves.

The Lalafell are a race from the seas south of Eorzea in Final Fantasy XIV. They somewhat resemble the Tarutaru from Final Fantasy XI, but their bodies are taller, making them slightly closer in proportion to human toddlers. The race consists of the Plainsfolk, which live in thatched-roof homes and have great hearing, and the Dunesfolk who live in the desert and herd animals.

The Miqo'te are a cat-like race from Eorzea in Final Fantasy XIV. They are similar in appearance to the Mithra of Final Fantasy XI. Like the Hyur, the Miqo'te are an immigrant race; they are not originally native to the region.

The Miqo'te have diverged into two physically distinguishable groups — the diurnal Seekers of the Sun and the nocturnal Keepers of the Moon.

The Roegadyn are a race from the seas north of Eorzea in Final Fantasy XIV. They are similar to the Galka of Final Fantasy XI, but lack a tail, and do not look as ursine. Most of them are of the Sea Wolf tribe, and live by the sea as fishermen, although some become Mercenaries and/or Pirates. Another tribe, the Lohengarde, also known as the Hellsguard, live near a volcano believed to be the gate to hell, and use magic.

Game Video

Warrior (Fighter) — A specialist in heavy weapons and armor who can withstand tremendous amounts of punishment. Can become the Knight later in the game, who is able to use the most powerful weapons and some White Magic spells.

Monk (Black Belt) — A martial arts expert who is best left fighting empty-handed, but may also wield nunchaku, and the most basic of staves. Does tremendous amounts of damage in combat, but cannot wear heavy armor. Can become the Master later in the game. In the original Famicom/NES version a high level, barehanded Master who is unencumbered by armor, can do more damage in a single attack than any other character type; a party of four Masters can defeat the final boss monster in less than two full rounds. A rather weak class in the beginning, but you never have to buy much weapons/armor for him.

Thief — A high evasion/accuracy finesse fighter with very limited weapon and armor selection, but greater agility and luck (ability to escape from combat). However, the ability to flee is bugged in versions before the Origins release. Later in the game, the Thief can be upgraded to the Ninja class. Ninja can use almost every weapon and most armor, and can use many Black Magic spells.

White Mage — A specialist in White Magic. Not a good fighter, but can use hammers for physical attacks. Can be upgraded into a White Wizard, which allows the character to use the most powerful White Magic spells in the game.

Black Mage — A specialist in Black Magic and a very weak fighter. Becomes the Black Wizard later on. Black Wizard is the only character who can cast Flare (NUKE in the original North American localization), one of the two damaging spells that retain full effectiveness against Chaos (the White Wizard can cast Holy, the other spell, but it is less powerful than Flare).

Red Mage — A jack-of-all-trades character, able to use most but not all of both White and Black Magic, and possessing fighting abilities similar to but not quite as good as the Fighter. Becomes the Red Wizard later in the game.
