Story
Terra Branford, named Tina in the Japanese version, a half-human, half-esper girl who spent most of her young life being bred as a weapon for the Empire. She is suspicious of anyone who wants access to her powers and not fully knowing what those powers are adds to her wariness. Her unique abilities make her a key player in the war between the Gestahlian Empire and the rebel factions.
Locke Cole, also known as Lock, is often less than serious. He jokes around with and about the other party members, particularly teasing Edgar for his flirtatiousness. He is proud of his skills and insistent on being called a "treasure hunter" or "adventurer" rather than a thief. He is a kindhearted individual who tries to help others and prevent them from experiencing the sorrow he has.
Edgar Roni Figaro is the king of Figaro Castle and the older twin brother of Sabin Rene Figaro. He is a master engineer, which leads him to create odd and unusual weapons, mostly as a hobby. Edgar often redecorates his room and is flirtatious with women, a trait he shares with many other characters in the series.
Sabin René Figaro, named Mash in the Japanese version, is Edgar Roni Figaro's twin brother and thus an heir to the throne of Figaro Castle. He fled his kingdom in search of a quiet life free of corruption, and lived as a student of the martial arts. Sabin usually doesn't mind jokes at his own expense and will laugh heartily at them himself. He has an unflappable determination and excels at thriving in situations where most ordinary people would die or give up.
Shadow is a high-priced ninja mercenary, he offers his services to both Empire and Returners at various stages throughout the game. He is a loner, as his only friend is his dog, Interceptor. Shadow comes and goes as he pleases, as throughout the World of Balance he leaves the player's party at various points after battle without warning.
Cyan Garamonde, named Cayenne in the Japanese version, is a Samurai and one of the finest and most noble soldiers of the kingdom of Doma, who watched his family and friends die as a result of Kefka's poisoning of the water supply of the castle. Also, Cyan has a distinguishable pseudo-Old English manner of speech, using archaic expressions such as "thou", "dost", "thy", referring to males with the title "Sir", and so forth.
Gau, a feral child surviving since infancy in the harsh wilderness known as the Veldt, Gau has a unique skill to leap into monsters to learn their attack patterns. Having grown up alone and in the wild, Gau has no concept for etiquette or grammar and often refers to himself in the third person. And Gau has a keen interest in shiny objects, hoarding them in a cave on the Veldt.
Celes Chere, a genetically enhanced Magitek Knight initially serving as a general of the Gestahlian Empire, she becomes disillusioned with the empire and turns her back on them to join the Returners. Celes is Locke Cole's love interest, and works as a foil to Terra Branford, their character development and abilities paralleling each other.
Setzer Gabbiani is the owner of the world's only airship: the Blackjack. He is the inveterate gambler and womanizer who joins forces with the party after being tricked by Celes, offering the use of his airship to transport the heroes around the world. And Setzer cannot resist a gamble; he thrives on risks - such as his planned abduction of Maria - and will never pass up an opportunity to prove his skill. Most of his scars come from gambling sessions gone wrong, although some also come from airship accidents.
Mog is fondly remembered as the first playable Moogle character in the series, as well as the first moogle to speak human language. Mog is shown to be more intelligent than the other moogles, and acts as their leader. He is the only seen moogle who can speak the human language, while the rest just say "Kupo" or variations of it. He is bossy, seen when he tells Umaro to join the party.
Strago Magus is a Blue Mage from the remote town of Thamasa, one of the few remaining Magi. He lives with his adoptive granddaughter, Relm Arrowny. However, he is overprotective of Relm, not letting her join the party when she asks to. Despite this, he is a brave old man, and is not willing to back down from an enemy.
Relm Arrowny, a sassy young girl living in the town of Thamasa. She is a talented artist who can make her paintings come alive with magic. And she constantly scolds Strago for making stupid decisions. She also makes biting remarks when someone is acting foolishly.
Gogo, a mysterious, fully shrouded master of the art of mimicry who agrees to lend support only when the party finds their way to the lair in the stomach of a giant monster called the Zone Eater.
Umaro is a Yeti who lives deep in the mines of Narshe, uses primitive stone tools, and answers only to Mog. He is a secret character who can only be recruited in the World of Ruin. He is capable of limited speech.

Game Video
Warrior (Fighter) — A specialist in heavy weapons and armor who can withstand tremendous amounts of punishment. Can become the Knight later in the game, who is able to use the most powerful weapons and some White Magic spells.
Monk (Black Belt) — A martial arts expert who is best left fighting empty-handed, but may also wield nunchaku, and the most basic of staves. Does tremendous amounts of damage in combat, but cannot wear heavy armor. Can become the Master later in the game. In the original Famicom/NES version a high level, barehanded Master who is unencumbered by armor, can do more damage in a single attack than any other character type; a party of four Masters can defeat the final boss monster in less than two full rounds. A rather weak class in the beginning, but you never have to buy much weapons/armor for him.
Thief — A high evasion/accuracy finesse fighter with very limited weapon and armor selection, but greater agility and luck (ability to escape from combat). However, the ability to flee is bugged in versions before the Origins release. Later in the game, the Thief can be upgraded to the Ninja class. Ninja can use almost every weapon and most armor, and can use many Black Magic spells.
White Mage — A specialist in White Magic. Not a good fighter, but can use hammers for physical attacks. Can be upgraded into a White Wizard, which allows the character to use the most powerful White Magic spells in the game.
Black Mage — A specialist in Black Magic and a very weak fighter. Becomes the Black Wizard later on. Black Wizard is the only character who can cast Flare (NUKE in the original North American localization), one of the two damaging spells that retain full effectiveness against Chaos (the White Wizard can cast Holy, the other spell, but it is less powerful than Flare).
Red Mage — A jack-of-all-trades character, able to use most but not all of both White and Black Magic, and possessing fighting abilities similar to but not quite as good as the Fighter. Becomes the Red Wizard later in the game.
