The story begins as the Red Wings are attacking the city of Mysidia to steal their Water Crystal. When Cecil, Captain of the Red Wings, afterwards questions the king's motives, he is stripped of his rank and sent with Kain to deliver a package to the Village of Mist. There, Kain and Cecil watch in horror as monsters from inside the package destroy the village. A young girl, Rydia, is the only survivor and summons an earthquake in anger, separating Cecil and Kain. Cecil awakens afterward and takes the wounded Rydia to a nearby pub. Baron soldiers come for Rydia but Cecil defends her, and she joins him on his journey.......

Story

Cecil Harvey is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy IV. Initially a Dark Knight and captain of the Red Wings of Baron, Cecil begins to question his King's motives, which gradually sets off a chain of events that leads him on the path to righteousness, then after a trial and the battle with the first of the Four Elemental Archfiends,he transforms into a Paladin.

Rosa Joanna Farrell hails from Baron, and is a skilled Archer and White Mage. Rosa is Cecil Harvey and Kain Highwind's childhood friend, and harbors romantic feelings for Cecil. Though Cecil is reluctant to let her follow him into danger at first, she stays by his side.

Kain Highwind is the commander of the Baron Dragoons, and Cecil and Rosa's childhood friend. With a rivalry with Cecil and unrequited feelings for Rosa, Kain succumbs to the forces ofGolbez's side, making his comrades' trust in him waver.

Rydia is introduced as a seven-year old girl, and her role in the story, from her introduction as a young child to her sudden change to an adult. After her village, Mist is unknowingly destroyed by Cecil and Kain under their King's orders, she became the last of the summoners. Cecil's need to protect her and gain her forgiveness earns him a formidable ally on his quest.

Yang Fang Leiden is the karate master of Fabul kingdom. He aids Cecil on behalf of his kingdom. He has trained from a young age to become a top martial artist. He is ambushed on Mt. Hobs by Baron, while teaching some of his students. He then joins Cecil's group, to defend his kingdom from the inevitable attack.

Edward Chris von Muir is the bard Tellah's daughter Anna fell in love with. In reality, he is actually the Prince of the kingdom of Damcyan. When Baron attacks his kingdom, Anna sacrifices her life to save his. His love for her compels him to assist Cecil in finding a way to heal Rosa , and stop Baron from taking more lives.

Palom is a casual show-off, even to adults, and refers to himself as "The Mysidian Genius" or "Prodigy". This, combined with his inflated ego, causes him to get a little out of hand, leading to Porom having to settle him down, either with words or by smacking him on the head.

Porom is respectful and polite, and she often has to keep Palom in line with both words and discipline, often whacking him on the head when he steps over the line. However, she truly does love her brother and supports his quest to become a Sage, but believes he lacks the discipline

Edge, real name Edward Geraldine, is the prince of Eblan and a skilled Ninja. He is brash and has an inflated ego, and frequently flirts with women. He is kind and has a strong sense of right and wrong, and defends his kingdom no matter the price.  Moreover, he joins Cecil's party, to assure that justice prevails, and evil cannot win.

Cid Pollendina is the leading engineer of Baron, and the man responsible for the invention of the airships. He particularly cares for Cecil and Rosa. And he is not happy with the way Baron has used his inventions to gain power and suppress the world. He soon joins the quest to bring an end to the villainy in Baron.

Tellah is a revered sage of Mysdia. He loves his daughter Anna very much and only wishes to protect her from what he thinks will harm her. When his daughter runs away to marry a bard, he sets out to stop her. He is crass and sometimes downright rude, but determined, and can work alone as well as working alongside others.

Game Video

Warrior (Fighter) — A specialist in heavy weapons and armor who can withstand tremendous amounts of punishment. Can become the Knight later in the game, who is able to use the most powerful weapons and some White Magic spells.

Monk (Black Belt) — A martial arts expert who is best left fighting empty-handed, but may also wield nunchaku, and the most basic of staves. Does tremendous amounts of damage in combat, but cannot wear heavy armor. Can become the Master later in the game. In the original Famicom/NES version a high level, barehanded Master who is unencumbered by armor, can do more damage in a single attack than any other character type; a party of four Masters can defeat the final boss monster in less than two full rounds. A rather weak class in the beginning, but you never have to buy much weapons/armor for him.

Thief — A high evasion/accuracy finesse fighter with very limited weapon and armor selection, but greater agility and luck (ability to escape from combat). However, the ability to flee is bugged in versions before the Origins release. Later in the game, the Thief can be upgraded to the Ninja class. Ninja can use almost every weapon and most armor, and can use many Black Magic spells.

White Mage — A specialist in White Magic. Not a good fighter, but can use hammers for physical attacks. Can be upgraded into a White Wizard, which allows the character to use the most powerful White Magic spells in the game.

Black Mage — A specialist in Black Magic and a very weak fighter. Becomes the Black Wizard later on. Black Wizard is the only character who can cast Flare (NUKE in the original North American localization), one of the two damaging spells that retain full effectiveness against Chaos (the White Wizard can cast Holy, the other spell, but it is less powerful than Flare).

Red Mage — A jack-of-all-trades character, able to use most but not all of both White and Black Magic, and possessing fighting abilities similar to but not quite as good as the Fighter. Becomes the Red Wizard later in the game.
