An earthquake opens up a previously hidden cavern in Altar Cave near the village of Ur on the floating continent. Four young orphans under the care of Topapa, the village elder, explore the earthquake's impact and come across a crystal of light. The crystal grants them a portion of its power, and instructs them to go forth and restore balance to the world. Not knowing what to make of the crystal's pronouncements, but nonetheless recognizing the importance of its words, the four inform their adoptive family of their mission and set out to explore an overworld outside the area in which they were brought up, in order to bring balance back to the world.......

Story

Out of all four party members and all 23 Jobs in the game, there are 8,855 different party configurations. The classes featured in Final Fantasy III are: Warrior, Monk, Red Mage, White Mage, Black Mage, Thief, Knight, Ranger, Scholar, Geomancer, Dragoon, Viking, Dark Knight, Bard, Evoker, Black Belt, Devout, Magus, Summoner, Ninja and Sage.

In the original Famicom Version of the game, Onion Knight is the default job class, while it is a secret job class in the Remake VersionThe four Onion Knights of the Famicom Version are not named in-game. The official manga serialization of the game, Leged of the Eternal Wind: Final Fantasy III, names them Muuchi, Doug, J. Bowie, and Melfi (the only female in the group). In the Dissidia Ultimania guide and on the series's 25th Anniversary website, they are given the same names as the protagonists in the Remake Version of Final Fantasy III - Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus.

The Freelancer is a job class in the remake vesion. It is the default job class, available from the beginning of the game. Although Freelancers have low base attributes, they have a very diverse range of equipment, being able to equip many types of armor including some exclusive to a particular job. Freelancers lack any sort of particular expertise. While they can equip most weapons and armor, as well as use magic, their overall abilities are well below average. They are very useful in the beginning of the game but as the story progresses, they get weaker.

Sara Altney is the Princess of Sasune and the player's first extra party member. While she may be a princess, she is more than capable of taking care of herself. In the Nintendo DS and mobile platform remake, she has feelings toward Ingus. She aids the party by casting Cure on its members and Aero against monsters. As Cure and Aero are both White Magic spells, it is likely Lady Sara is supposed to be a White Mage character, like Aria Benett.

Cid Haze is an eccentric looking old man with a large beard, and wide brimmed wizard's hat with goggles on it. Cid can help out the party in battle, either with a one-hit hammer attack or a casting of Fire. As with all ally characters, he attacks at random intervals, and his hammer attack hits a random target.

Desch, also known as Desh. A man suffering from amnesia, he is a capable warrior, and a bit of a womanizer despite being in a relationship with Salina. In the 3D remake version, he befriends Refia during his time traveling with the party. Desch can help out the party in battle, either with a 3 - 4 hit sword attack or a cast of Thundara. As with all ally characters, he attacks at random intervals, and his sword attack hits a random target. If he appears while in Mini status, he will always cast Thundara.

Alus Restor is the young crown prince of Saronia. An outspoken prince, he is shy and has recently fallen on hard times. In the 3D remake version for Nintendo DS and mobile platforms, Arc takes a liking towards him as both of them were belittled in the past, despite the age difference. Alus can use low-level White Magic, such as Confuse and Aero. He fights with a Boomerang.

Unei, also romanized as Unne, is a supporting character. She can aid the party by using Holy or Haste at the start of battle. Unei can aid the party in battles by either casting Haste on the whole party or cast Holy at a single enemy.

Doga, or Dorga is a supporting character, who temporarily joins the party. He is a powerful wizard who has lived for many years. Doga supports the party at several points of the game in his state as a mortal and even after his own death.  Doga aids in battles by casting Firaga on enemies. If the whole party has mini-status on (such as in the Cave of the Circle), Doga casts Flare on a single enemy.

Characters

Aria Benett, also known as Elia, is a non-playable character. She temporarily joins the party in order to restore the Water Crystal. She is also the first character in the series to have her own personal theme. Aria functions as a White Mage and occasionally casts Protect and Cura during battles.

Game Video

Warrior (Fighter) — A specialist in heavy weapons and armor who can withstand tremendous amounts of punishment. Can become the Knight later in the game, who is able to use the most powerful weapons and some White Magic spells.

Monk (Black Belt) — A martial arts expert who is best left fighting empty-handed, but may also wield nunchaku, and the most basic of staves. Does tremendous amounts of damage in combat, but cannot wear heavy armor. Can become the Master later in the game. In the original Famicom/NES version a high level, barehanded Master who is unencumbered by armor, can do more damage in a single attack than any other character type; a party of four Masters can defeat the final boss monster in less than two full rounds. A rather weak class in the beginning, but you never have to buy much weapons/armor for him.

Thief — A high evasion/accuracy finesse fighter with very limited weapon and armor selection, but greater agility and luck (ability to escape from combat). However, the ability to flee is bugged in versions before the Origins release. Later in the game, the Thief can be upgraded to the Ninja class. Ninja can use almost every weapon and most armor, and can use many Black Magic spells.

White Mage — A specialist in White Magic. Not a good fighter, but can use hammers for physical attacks. Can be upgraded into a White Wizard, which allows the character to use the most powerful White Magic spells in the game.

Black Mage — A specialist in Black Magic and a very weak fighter. Becomes the Black Wizard later on. Black Wizard is the only character who can cast Flare (NUKE in the original North American localization), one of the two damaging spells that retain full effectiveness against Chaos (the White Wizard can cast Holy, the other spell, but it is less powerful than Flare).

Red Mage — A jack-of-all-trades character, able to use most but not all of both White and Black Magic, and possessing fighting abilities similar to but not quite as good as the Fighter. Becomes the Red Wizard later in the game.
